Navaira
|
| Biography:
Known as the King of Tejano music, Emilio Navaira exhibits
a wide rang of musical talents. Coming from a large
and musical family, at age four he got his first guitar.
In fifth grade, he won the solo spot in the school choir
and got his first taste of touring. Throughout elementary
and high school, Emilio participated in statewide singing
competitions, sang in the choir and acted in school plays.
After graduating from high school at 17, he earned a voice
scholarship at Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos,
Texas. After three years at SWT, he realized his love of
music involved performing and his college education was
leading to a career as a teacher. He announced to his family
that he was not going back to school, instead, he auditioned
for and won the spot as lead singer for a local Tejano band
known as David Lee Garza y Los Musicales. He stayed with
the band for five years, learning the ins and outs of performing.
His background in dramatics from school came in handy as
he fine tuned his performance style.
He left Garza to form his own band, Emilio Navaira y Grupo
Rio, in 1989. He had always performed country music as well
as tejano, his new band played a mix of rock-flavored Spanish
music and traditional country. He received Grammy nominations
for Emilio y Rio in 1989, and for 1992's Unsung Highways.
In 1994, he dropped his surname to become simply, Emilio.
He won multiple Tejano Music Awards as Male Entertainer
of the Year, Male Vocalist of the Year, Album and Showband
of the Year, and picked up and impressive international
following in the process. By the turn of the century he
had won 24 Tejano Music Awards and that includes Male Entertainer
of the Year nine years in a row.
In 1996, he started his solo career. His first country album,
Life is Good, debuted at No. 13 on Billboards country chart.
The success of the album led to a tour with Alan Jackson.
He performed at the annual Country Radio Seminar on the
prestigious New Faces Show, and earned one of the sought-after
rising-star "Bumper Spots" on the Country Music
Association Awards Show.
In 1997, he toured with Clay Walker, Terri Clark, and James
Bonamy and releasing two albums, It's On The House and A
Mi Gente, for Capitol EMI Latin Records. By 2000, he had
sold over a million albums as an artist.
A caring family man, Emilio has created, along with his
wife Cindy, the Tejanos for Children Foundation to provide
financial and emotional assistance to families in need.
The Santa Rosa Children's Hospital of San Antonio is one
of the many organizations that has benefited from Emilio's
generosity. Emilio and Cindy have three children: sons Emilio
and Diego, and daughter Emely Ann.

Special Notice 3/29/2008
Since the tragedy of Emilio's accident on Easter Sunday
2008, a lot of his music has been in great demand. Our
distributors who service the retail markets in the USA
have seen inventories of Emilio's merchandise drop dramatically.
Emilio's record labels BMG and EMI Latin had before the
accident, stopped producing any of Emilio's older releases.
At this time we do not know if production will be restarted
once again of his older releases.
